CocoRosie
Grey Oceans

"The story goes, that a girl named jack was really a guy called susan, his skirts were dark and wicked, her face tan and fair. Oh jesus christ, Marry Magdalena, dear wicked knife, sweet bloodthirsty blade, I'd make thee a babe, burnt out like some vengeful mansion, whose eyes on fire and swirling with gas, looked devilish and unabashed. Little kittens paw their way through bloody tracks in the snow, behind the shed, shedding little salty salt tears, crying in crystal mirror reflections of a chandelier. Laughing clown and porcelain clatter, vintage bras on silver platters, doughy, deep fried, fish in batter, brain splatter, full bladder, ethereal matter, butterflies."

After touring for the better part of 2007 on their last album, CocoRosie were ready to create new songs. At an Argentinian festival in Buenos Aires, they met Nicolas Kalwill, a renowned studio engineer who had worked on 15 Argentinean gold and platinum albums, who became the engineer for the recording of their next album. The first recording session took place in a world renowned vintage studio in Buenos Aires called Panda during the days following the festival.

"The first session at Panda was amazing. We were bursting with music, too many ideas to document at one time. We stayed up for five nights straight and recorded almost seven songs."

During these sessions their new band member, Gael Rakotondrabe - a successful jazz pianist based in Paris who had also become known for writing and arranging classical works for the Royal Dutch Orchestra as well as collaborating with CocoRosie onstage and in the studio - finally became their kindred, musical spirit and creative partner in many of the songs on the new album.

Over the next one and a half years, they would all meet up after each major tour and record in whichever studio they found themselves closest to. Besides Buenos Aires, CocoRosie also spent time recording in Paris, Berlin, New York, and Melbourne.

Eventually, a couple of the new songs started to push their way into the band's live shows and by the end of 2009 were ready to become CocoRosie's fourth album "Grey Oceans". It was mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound in New York.

"Between our two vocal stylings we have pushed even further, our differences and played with this dualism to show an inner and outer world expression in the characters of our songs."

CocoRosie are two sisters, Sierra and Bianca, who after many years apart, started making music together, on a whim, in Paris in 2003. Their first album, "La Maison de Mon Reve", was released in 2004 and immediately won the hearts of tens of thousands of music fans everywhere, followed by their second album, "Noah's Ark" (2005) and "The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn" (2007). Over the past 5 years, CocoRosie have played hundreds of dates throughout Europe at prominent venues as well as performing at many major European festivals.

In between the writing and recording sessions for the new record, Bianca celebrated the opening of her own tea gallery in Paris on Valentine's Day of 2008 and also had several art exhibits in such places as Milan, Groningen and Brussels.
